Building & Facilities
The Music degree program is offered by the MPA Department within the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. The MPA Department generates curriculum and oversees facilities, instruments and equipment to support the major, develops and implements public performances, and presents guest artists and presentations to the university as well as the surrounding regional communities.
The MPA Department is located on the CSUMB campus in the Music Hall, Building 30.The building presently has an excellent recital hall, with 132 fixed seats and a nine-foot Steinway D piano.
The Steinway D is one of three Steinways and four Boston acoustic pianos purchased by the university for the department. In addition, there are electronic pianos and synthesizers for student use.
The music building is equipped with a state-of-the-art recording studio and MIDI labs with a total of tweleve workstations. Small classrooms are part of the building and, when vacant, they also serve as practice facilities for students.
The department's instrumental inventory includes a variety of instruments, a modern piano lab, a few larger instruments i.e. string bass, and an impressive array of percussion instruments. The music library has collections of ensemble music for band and choir in addition to an extensive collection of vocal and instrumental recordings. In addition, the department has a rare and unique collection of jazz ensemble arrangements received through collaborations with the Monterey Jazz Festival and the Smithsonian Jazz Oral History Library.
Additionally, campus performance venues include the 450-seat World Theater and 500-seat University Center.
